Reflection on today's lesson: Classification

In todays lesson we've gone more into depth about the BBFC and film classification. I've learnt that as society progresses, the certification may change in the future. For example, a film that would've perhaps been rated 18 in the 1980's would be classified as 15 today because of society changing and becoming more acceptable of what would've been highly controversial subjects.

I've learnt that in films, it's all about the sound. For example, 5 seconds of sound was removed from one of the Harry Potter films to class it as a 12A. This is because sound impacts children as they are more vulnerable and easily scared.

For my film, it was rated a 12 but now has been bumped up to a 15 because of the aesthetic appeal of the villain. I've considered how a child aged 12 would be impacted by an image like the villain in my film so chances are they might be mentally disturbed.

The lack of concepts and the details however made me class my film as 12 before because of the only two concepts that's included, which are language and threat. In language there are perhaps only a couple of swear words which would've been mentioned but only out of fear rather than to intimidate someone or out of anger. With threat there is the villain that chases the girl with no knowledge of why she's being chased.

To have classed my film as a 15 i thought there would have be obscure language which most definitely would be offensive. Also, strong violent acts which could include bloodshed and sadistic violence.

Today's lesson has made me think about the content of my film. What i personally wouldn't find scary may actually impact a younger audience.
